Breast Implant Removal in Tampa

Breast implant removal procedures are relatively common for experienced plastic surgeons. Some patients who undergo breast implant removal simply decide that implants no longer fit into their lifestyle, while others decide to replace or exchange their implants with a larger or different type. There are also medical reasons for choosing this procedure.

Regardless of the reason, many women with breast implants will require revision surgery or removal at some point in their life. Plastic surgeons often use the existing incision location to approach the implant, making the procedure as simple and minimally invasive as possible.

When to Consider Breast Implant Removal in Tampa

Of all the indications for breast implant removal in Tampa, the three most common are size and shape change, capsular contracture, and implant rupture.

Other indications include complications related to surgery, implant rupture, breast cancer, shifting of the implant (displacement), wrinkling of the implant, and other undesirable outcomes. A primary goal is to resolve these issues and restore a satisfactory appearance to your breasts, whether that involves replacement of the breast implants or another cosmetic procedure.

Your Breast Implant Removal Procedure

Breast implant removal is conducted using either general anesthesia or local anesthesia depending on the complexity of the procedure and the patients' needs. The surgery is conducted in an outpatient setting and takes an average of 2 hours.

After administering the anesthetic, Dr. Albear makes a small cut over the scar made when your implants were originally inserted during breast augmentation. He then removes the implant, deflating the implant first if it is made of saline. A new implant may be inserted at this point if requested. A breast lift procedure may also be recommended to provide a satisfactory outcome. After these steps are completed, the incision site is closed.

After Surgery to Remove or Replace Implants

Pasco County plastic surgeon Dr. Albear will go over with you detailed aftercare instructions tailored to your needs. Many patients can return home after about one hour following surgery. It is common for women to return to full activity within two to three weeks, and an everyday schedule within a couple of days post-surgery. After undergoing breast implant removal surgery, you may experience mild discomfort, swelling and bruising. If your breast implant removal was also accompanied by a breast lift or other augmentation procedures, your recovery may be longer or require specific care.

During recovery it may be helpful to keep in mind that women will occasionally suffer from psychological distress after breast implant removal. The change in the body following surgery can affect some women deeply. If you experience this kind of psychological trauma and it does not lessen with time, please seek professional assistance.
