Liposuction in Tampa

As the most common cosmetic surgical technique used in America, liposuction helps to slim almost any part of the body by removing unwanted fat.  Liposuction is most commonly performed by Tampa plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Albear for body contouring of the abdomen, back, flanks, thighs, buttocks, and chest.

Liposuction in Tampa is often used to target fat deposits that are particularly resistant to exercise and dietary changes, and is frequently used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures. That said, it is important to remember that the candidates who report the most satisfaction after liposuction also maintain a healthy lifestyle.

When to Consider Liposuction

The most prevalent indication for liposuction is simply the presence of unwanted fat. However, ideal candidates will also have some or more of the following characteristics:

  • Persistent fat deposits that refuse to change with diet and exercise
  • Good skin elasticity
  • General good health
  • Stable body weight
  • Realistic expectations

Your Liposuction Procedure in Tampa

Liposuction requires an average of 45 minutes to 2 hours. Depending on your individual needs, as well as the complexity of the procedure involved, liposuction may be conducted in an outpatient center or hospital.

Dr. Albear will administer a local anesthesia and intravenous sedation for minor procedures, and general anesthesia for major procedures. Small incisions are made near the targeted areas, and a tumescent solution is injected into the area. The tumescent solution aids in the body contouring processes by firming the fat tissue for easier removal. Next a cannula, or thin tube, that is connected to an aspirator, is inserted through the incision. The vacuuming mechanism dislodges and removes the fat.

What Happens After Liposuction?

Though every case is different, most patients will be asked to wear an elastic compression garment for 2-3 weeks to help control swelling. Dr. Albear may recommend that you begin to walk as quickly after the procedure as possible to assist in healing, and may prescribe medications to manage discomfort.

Bruising and swelling are the most common postoperative symptoms. The way in which the cannula operates in liposuction can damage fat and other fibrous cells in the body. Blood flows immediately to these areas in order to heal them, causing bruising and swelling. These symptoms usually subside within one to two weeks, and disappear anywhere from two weeks to three months. Additional symptoms may include numbness.
