The tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a procedure performed by Tampa area plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Albear in which fat and skin are removed from the abdomen area, creating a tighter, more toned tummy.

While patients are encouraged to remember that only a healthy diet and regular exercise can maintain changes made by plastic surgery procedures, tummy tucks can serve as the catalyst you need to start working toward a healthier, more attractive body shape.

Aesthetic goals of Tummy Tuck surgery include:

  • Flat abdomen
  • Thinner waistline
  •  Smoother skin
  • Decrease in stretchmarks
  • Streamlining of hip area

When to Consider a Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty is commonly performed after major weight loss or after pregnancy. Research shows that individuals who already practice healthy lifestyles are more likely to maintain a slim abdomen after the surgery. If you meet the following criteria, you may be a candidate:

  • Protruding abdomen
  • Midsection disproportionate to rest of body
  • Dramatic weight loss has resulted in loose abdominal skin
  • Stretch marks around the midsection

Before and After Tummy Tuck in Wesley Chapel (Tampa) FL

Your Tummy Tuck with Tampa Plastic Surgeon Dr. Albear

The tummy tuck procedure generally takes between 2-5 hours, and is conducted under general anesthesia. Dr. Albear with mark the incision sites, taking care to minimize visible scarring. An incision is made just under the abdomen and above the pubic hairline, and a second incision is made in the bikini line. The excess skin in this area is pulled down and inward, and the abdominal muscles are tightened with sutures. Finally, the skin is re-draped, and the incision closed with dissolvable sutures. Depending on your needs, Dr. Albear may combine the tummy tuck procedure with liposuction of the upper abdomen, hips and flanks. If the change created by the tummy tuck is significant, your umbilicus (belly button) may also be remodeled and relocated.

What Happens After Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Immediately after surgery, a gauze dressing and mild compression will be applied to the area. Most patients are asked to remain in the hospital between 12 -18 hours after surgery for monitoring. Dr. Albear will go over more detailed aftercare instructions with you so that you know what to do when you return home. Most patients require at least one week away from work, and can resume normal activity between 2-3 weeks after the operation.
